Mentors
Cosimo Scotucci
Cosimo Scotucci is an architect and innovator. Through his works, he reflects an ideology that focuses on people, envisioning the world of tomorrow. He defines himself as an optimistic idealist.
Cosimo studied in Rome, where he graduated with a master’s degree in architecture. He first founded Rublic, a startup with the aim of upgrading urban furniture into infrastructural pieces capable of helping mitigate the urban heat island effect. In 2016, he joined MVRDV Architects in Rotterdam, where he is currently a senior project leader. Within MVRDV, Cosimo oversees projects in the Asia Studio, with a specific focus on people-centered design, sustainability, and circular design. Since he joined MVRDV in late 2016, he has successfully contributed to realizing projects in mainland China and Taiwan. He always strives for the most visionary and sustainable solutions; his work is an investigation into radical design.
In 2019, he founded Cosimo Scotucci Studio, where he works together with a multidisciplinary team on speculative design, tackling the biggest issues in society.
The office is conceived as a design laboratory where they experiment with pioneering ideas to create a more democratic and resilient future. Through functional scientific fictional stories, the office aims to create a better tomorrow, triggering the imagination of a new world. At the lab, Cosimo and his team collaborate with scientists, engineers, and specialists from every field to outsmart the threats to humankind. Cosimo believes that sustainability can be beautiful, entertaining, and engaging, and that, with his science-based art, he can contribute to creating awareness, mitigating, and resolving the most pressing issues for contemporary society: from climate change to social justice, from technological developments to human well-being.
His work has been widely published and awarded across the world.
Programme
Thinking outside the box: how unconventional design solution can contribute to overcome climate challenges
For the first part of the workshop, participants will be introduced into the integration of AI as a powerful tool to boost creativity in developing sustainable and innovative design strategies. This workshop highlights how AI-driven processes can enhance the exploration of unconventional ideas, enabling designers to push the boundaries of traditional methods and create impactful solutions that address climate change. By merging AI with creative design thinking, participants will learn to generate bold, out-of-the-box solutions that contribute to a more sustainable and resilient future.
AI integration: How to embed AI into the design process and harnessing its power
Participants will delve into the practical aspects of incorporating AI into their design workflows. This session will focus on the seamless integration of AI tools to enhance creativity and efficiency throughout the design process. Participants will learn how to utilize AI for tasks such as generating design iterations, optimizing sustainable solutions, and refining concepts with unprecedented speed and precision. The session will provide actionable strategies for embedding AI into everyday design practices, enabling participants to harness the full potential of AI to drive innovative and impactful outcomes in their projects.
NORDFY Environmental Intelligence
The lecture on Environmental Intelligence (EI) within the workshop aims to deepen participants' understanding of the critical role that data-driven, environmentally conscious design plays in shaping sustainable urban environments. This session is integral to the broader Environmental Intelligence – EI program, providing attendees with a conceptual and practical framework to integrate environmental intelligence into their work.
EI program by NORDFY is a call to action for a new generation of design leaders in an era of environmentally conscious design. Join us as we explore the intersections of technology, nature, and human experience, and shape a future where built environments harmonize with the natural world.
NORDFY & MVRDV Internal Competition - Design Challenge: Conceptualize a New Strategy for Positive Sustainable Impact
Assignment:
In this 8-hour workshop, participants are tasked with developing an innovative design concept that contributes to a positive sustainable impact, inspired by the groundbreaking work of Cosimo Scotucci, Senior project leader at MVRDV, such as projects like dH2Ome, Drops, and Physx. These projects emphasize innovative strategies that merge design, technology, and sustainability to create impactful solutions for environmental challenges.
Participants will have the creative freedom to choose their focus area within sustainability, whether it’s a new architectural concept, a product design, or a system for sustainable living. The goal is to conceptualize a strategy that leverages AI to amplify creativity and practical impact, much like Scotucci’s projects, which use innovative design to address real-world issues such as water scarcity and sustainable energy.
Throughout the workshop, attendees will be guided in using AI tools to enhance their design process, from ideation to final concept. They will employ AI to explore and generate innovative ideas, analyze potential impacts, and refine their strategies. The use of AI in this exercise aims to expand participants' ability to conceptualize groundbreaking solutions that are not only sustainable but also visionary in their approach to solving environmental challenges.
Participants will present their final concepts, demonstrating how AI was integrated into their process and how their design contributes to a sustainable future. This hands-on assignment provides an opportunity to explore the cutting edge of sustainable design and to create solutions that push the boundaries of current thinking.
